In a hobby that is in large part centered around art, imagination, creative design and general artistry, data has still made way it into the hobby. Warhammer 40k is a miniature wargame system designed and sold by Games Workshop. They produce small scale scifi based plastic miniatures, they sell the tools and glue to build them, they sell the paints and brushes to paint them. They encourage people to customize and change models to make them their own, and if you are not into that they have 30+ years of lore, books and stories written for you to reference in how your paint your miniatures. This is a miniature company first and foremost, and that is something they have always said. They pride themselves on making the best and highest quality miniatures on the market and it is a company that has been beloved by its fans for years.
But even with all that being said, the most talked about part of the hobby and reason most people get into the hobby is the table top game system they have created, where you can take part in a wargame style match against your opponent, moving your miniatures around the table and using their various abilities to claim victory.
The game started as an excuse to sell the miniatures, sure you would have some people buying them just to paint them but if you can create something to pull the competitive people into the hobby through the game system, now you are going to sell dozens of models to each person. And sell they have, as of writing this (May 2024) Games Workshops market value is listed at 3.24 Billion dollars, they are a massive company producing millions of miniatures and there are thousands of games being played daily at stores, in living rooms, garages and kitchen tables.
Now there is international tournaments hosted all around the world, in major cities like Los Vegas, and London and even international online ranking systems to determine the top players. Massive events hosting thousands of players total are held multiple times a year, with each person coming to try to prove they are the best general.
All of this to say, there is a lot of data waiting to be analysis when it comes to Warhammer 40k. All of that data can be used to help bring as much balance as possible to the game and give everyone who plays a competitive chance at winning. Whether you chase the meta and play the best armies available or you stick with your favorites and play them no matter how good they are because you love them, you contribute to the community and to the data that goes into bring balance and fun to everyone who shows up to the table.
I review the complicated beast that is the Warhammer 40k meta, what data is used, how it is interrupted and how it can be used to bring balance to the game. You can check out my the link to this review at the top of my blog or by clicking here:
